Competition Draw

On May 7, 2016, in Bangkok, the International Gymnastics Federation conducted the draw for the 2016 Olympic Games, determining the order of competition for this summer's competition. The random draw, conducted during the meeting of the FIG Council, determines starting order for qualification and apparatus finals. Team and all-around finals are seeded based on qualification rankings, with the top qualifiers starting in Olympic order.

2016 Olympic Qualification

Artistic gymnastics has allotments for 98 men and 98 women at this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. For both competitions, 12 full teams may send five gymnasts each, allowing for 38 additional individual gymnasts. In trampoline, 16 men and 16 women will compete. In rhythmic gymnastics, 26 gymnasts will compete in the individual all-around, and 14 countries will compete in the five-member group competition.

The qualification was determined at two events: the 2015 World Championships in each discipline and the second qualifier held in April in Rio de Janeiro.

At the 2015 World Championships for artistic gymnastics, the first eight teams earned automatic qualification to the Olympic Games. Teams placing eighth to 16th were invited to the second qualifier. For the men, Germany, Ukraine, Netherlands and France earned the final four spots for teams in April, while Brazil, Germany, Belgium and France grabbed the final four tickets. The four other men's teams competing at the second qualifier — Romania, Belgium, Spain and Canada — and four women's teams — Switzerland, Australia, Romania and Korea — each earned one spot to be decided by their respective National Olympic Committees.

At the world championships, individual event medalists whose teams did not eventually qualify were also guaranteed qualification spots to the Olympics.

After team allotments and apparatus qualifiers from the world championships, that left 24 available spaces for male individuals from the second qualifier, with a limit of one per country. Three countries — Colombia, Mexico and Hungary — had two gymnasts placing within the top ranks, and may choose to send either gymnast this summer. Algeria's Mohamed Bourguieg, who placed outside the top ranks in April, was given the final spot in order to fulfill the requirement of full continental representation, as no other gymnast from Africa had qualified via other methods.

In the women's competition, 33 available spaces for individuals were available after the world championships. Five countries — Greece, Hungary, Mexico, Poland and Spain — had two gymnasts placing within the top ranks, and may choose to send either gymnast this summer. Two gymnasts who did not compete at the qualifier — Algeria's Farah Boufadene (who withdrew with injury) and Egypt's Sherine El-Zeiny — were allotted qualification spots in order to ensure full continental participation for Africa.

Brazil, as the host country, was also guaranteed one berth in each of the gymnastics disciplines. Brazil qualified full teams in artistic gymnastics, but was given berths for a group and an individual in rhythmic, and one spot in men's trampoline to ensure representation.

In addition, the Tripartite Commission — representing the FIG, the IOC and the local organizing committee — selected one male and one female gymnast as a Wild Card entrant following the second qualification. The Wild Card berths, which are for nations with extremely limited Olympic representation, were awarded to Panama's Isabella Amado and Monaco's Kévin Crovetto. Crovetto will be one of only three athletes in Rio for Monaco, which has not been represented in gymnastics since 1920. Amado will be the first Olympic gymnast in history for Panama, which is sending seven athletes to Rio.
