A series of flashbacks from the 2018 World Championships in Doha.

Vera van Pol of the Netherlands said she believes the Dutch women strike the right balance of artistry and difficulty in their performances.

“I think we do both,” said van Pol, a 2016 Olympian who also competed at the ’13 and ’14 Worlds. “We do hard skills in a creative way, so we use the Code of Points well. I think that’s our power to go higher in gymnastics.”

The 24-year-old van Pol, who finished 40th all-around in qualifications in Doha, said her position on the Dutch team is valuable beyond her scoring ability.

“I am a quiet person, so my role is to keep everybody calm and in control,” she said.
