With six medals, China dominated the first day of finals at the 42nd Turnier Der Meister tournament, an FIG World Cup for apparatus held Friday in Cottbus, Germany.

China's depth is apparent, as all six medals went to six different gymnasts, all relative newcomers.

The Turnier Der Meister is the 12th and final FIG World Cup/Challenge Cup event of 2017 and attracted 140 gymnasts from 28 nations to the city of Cottbus in northeast Germany.

Seven-time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina (Uzbekistan) won women's vault (full-twisting layout handspring front and 1 1/2-twisting Tsukahara), her 11th event win on the event and 15th overall in Cottbus. The 42-year-old mom stepped over the line on her first vault (full-twisting layout handspring front) but otherwise had beautiful execution with a stuck second vault for a 14.283 average.

Russian Lilia Akhaimova vaulted a Yurchenko 1 1/2 and Tsukahara full for the silver (13.733 average) ahead of Slovenian veteran Tjaša Kysselef (tucked handspring front full; Yurchenko 1 1/2; 13.716).

Germany's Elisabeth Seitz won gold on uneven bars, nailing her routine (Maloney uprise to Ricna; Jaeger; Stalder to piked Tkatchev to Pak; Van Leeuwen; toe-full to stuck full-twisting double back) to edge out China's Lyu Jiaqi (Maloney to Pak to Van Leeuwen; piked Jaeger from elgrip full; elgrip 1 1/2 to stuck double twist dismount) 14.900-14.866, with both gymnasts showing 6.1 Difficulty scores. Teammate Wang Cenyu, a first-year senior, took the bronze (Pak; Maloney to Gienger between the bars; double front half) showing exquisite tight body form and inverted pirouettes (14.200/5.5).

Slovenian stalwart Rok Klavora, competing in his sixth World Cup event of the year, finally won gold via a three-way tie break on men's floor exercise. By way of the top Execution score, Klavora (5.5 D) took gold over Dutch gymnast Bram Verhofstad (5.9 D) and top qualifier Kirill Prokopyev of Russia (6.1D), with all three tying with 14.133.

Competing in his first World Cup event, China's Wang Junwen (15.200) led an Asian sweep of the medals on pommel horse. Japan's Ryuhei Nashimoto (14.933) took silver over China's Tan Di (14.833).

Ukrainian Igor Radivilov prevented another Chinese victory on still rings, scoring 15.133 (6.0D) to defeat top qualifier Lei Peng (15.066/6.3) and Lan Xingyu (14.633/6.2).

Competition concludes Sunday afternoon at the Lausitz Arena with the first of two days of finals. World balance beam champion Pauline Schäfer, who qualified to beam and floor finals, headlines the field for the host team.
