Retired rhythmic gymnast Liubou Charkashyna (Belarus) is the new president of the International Gymnastics Federation's Athletes Commission, replacing Finland's Jani Tanskanen.

Retired rhythmic gymnast Liubou Charkashyna (Belarus) is the new president of the International Gymnastics Federation's Athletes Commission, replacing Finland's Jani Tanskanen.

Tanskanen, who was elected to the FIG's Executive Committee (EC) last fall, resigned his position on the Athletes Commission to avoid any conflicts of interest with his role on the EC.

"During the past seven years, I have done my best to make the athletes' voices heard within the FIG," said the 41-year-old Tanskanen, the 1997 world champion on high bar. "The interests of the athletes will always remain in my heart and will be the most important aspect in my new function as an FIG EC member. I congratulate Liubou on her election and I am utterly confident that she will defend the athletes' interests with the same passion."

Charkashyna, the all-around bronze medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games, was chosen last week to succeed Tanskanen as head of the commission.

"I would like to say thank you to Jani for his excellent work. He showed us how to defend the athletes at the highest level," said Charkashyna, 29. "I would like also to thank the commission for electing me and for its support. I will use all my powers to promote gymnastics, this beautiful sport, in the world."

The FIG's Athletes Commission is composed of one retired athlete from each of the FIG's disciplines, with two for artistic gymnastics (one male and one female). The other members of the commission are Portugal's Nuno Merino for trampoline, Hungary's Dóra Hegyi (aerobics), the United Kingdom's Beth Tweddle (women's artistic gymnastics).

A new Athletes Commission will be selected later this year, following the world championships in each discipline, where competing athletes will vote for their representative.
