With three gold medals already to her name in Rio de Janeiro, American Simone Biles is poised to tie or even surpass Olympic gymnastics records set decades ago.

Biles has already won every event she has competed in at the Olympics – she won gold with the U.S. team, won the all-around and then vault. She has two more events to compete – balance beam on Monday and floor exercise on Tuesday, where she is favored for gold once again. At the past two world championships, Biles walked away with four golds each time – team, all-around, balance beam and floor exercise – but missed out on the vault title. Her upgraded second vault in Rio helped her easily take that title, and put the elusive five golds within reach.

No female gymnast has ever won five gold medals at a single Olympic Games. Several have won four. The last time it was done was Romania's Ecaterina Szabo at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where she won golds with the team, as well as vault, balance beam and floor exercise.

On Sunday, Biles' third gold medal on vault made her the most successful gymnast at the Olympics since Romania's Catalina Ponor won three gold medals (team, balance beam and floor exercise) at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Prior to that, Romania's Daniela Silivaş was the previous gymnast who won three, taking three golds (uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise) along with two silvers (team, all-around) and a bronze (vault), as the last gymnast to win a medal in every event at the Olympics.

The record for men's gymnastics is six gold medals, won by Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin holds the record for the most medals won at a single competition, winning the maximum eight medals — three gold — at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, a feat unlikely to be matched in the age of specialists.
