After winning a silver medal with the Russian team on Monday, gymnast David Belyavsky managed to make his night even more memorable. In Rio de Janeiro, he proposed to his girlfriend of four years, who naturally said yes.

Belyavsky's now-fiancée, Maria Mikhailova, traveled to Rio to watch him compete. She and a fellow friend of Belyavsky rented an apartment while he stayed in the Olympic Village, and she said she has hardly been able to see him with his training schedule and focus on competition.

"Of course, we were in the arena when our guys were in the team final," Mikhailova told newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda. "The emotions were high! We cried when they announced that Russia won the silver. No one believed that they would be able to win a medal. But I knew that there would definitely be a medal! I believed!"

Mikhailova was unable to talk to Belyavsky after the competition, so she went to the Olympic Village to celebrate with him.

"We all hugged and congratulated each other," she said. "Then Nikita Nagornyy got a phone call. He picked up the phone, then handed it to David, who talked. And then he said to me very seriously, 'The Minister of Sport Vitaly Mutko called to congratulate me and he asked me to check my pockets.' Then he took out a box with a ring, got down on one knee and asked: 'Will you be my wife?' I was so confused ... it was very shocking to me. But, of course, I said 'Yes!' And I cried – for the second time that evening!"

The pair initially met online in January 2012 and struck up a friendship, Mikhailova told the newspaper. Mikhailova, who lived in Novosibirsk, eventually traveled to Belyavsky's hometown of Yekaterinburg, about a two-hour flight away.

"We agreed to meet," she explained. "While I was flying, I was terribly afraid! What is there waiting for me? How do we meet? But everything was very normal. First, we were very shy with each other, and the next day I no longer want to leave."

A year later, Mikhailova moved to Yekaterinburg. She said she plans to stay in Rio until the end of the competition, as Belyavsky qualified to finals on pommel horse and parallel bars, and travel back with him to Russia.

"Then we'll discuss all the details," she said. "I don't know whether it will be a magnificent wedding with lots of guests, or if we'll just arrange a holiday for the two of us. But I'm most inclined to think that this will be something personal."
