Daria Spiridonova (Russia) and Oleg Vernyayev (Ukraine) won the 31st Arthur Gander Memorial, held Wednesday in Chiasso, Switzerland.
The Gander Memorial – which alternates each year between Chiasso and Morges – features female gymnasts competing three events of their choice and male gymnasts competing four events. The top six gymnasts after qualification (two events for women and three events for men) advanced to their final event, with all scores counting toward the final.
Spiridonova, who picked up bronze medals (team and uneven bars) at the world championships earlier this month in Nanning, edged Romanian star Larisa Iordache, 43.200-43.000.
Spiridonova competed vault for the first event, scoring only 13.300 for 10th place, but moved up to first place after her 15.000 on uneven bars. She repeated uneven bars in the final, scoring 14.900 to clinch victory.
Iordache, the all-around and floor exercise silver medalist in Nanning, competed vault, uneven bars and floor exercise to place ahead of German veteran Elisabeth Seitz.
In the men's competition, Vernyayev crushed the competition with an easy victory. He topped German star Fabian Hambüchen by more than 2 full points, 62.250-62.000. Russia's Nikita Ignatyev won the bronze medal with 59.250.
Vernyayev, who captured the world title on parallel bars in Nanning, impressed on that event in Chiasso with 16.250.
The organizers also awarded special trophies for the top scores on two events: women's floor exercise (Iordache) and parallel bars (Vernyayev).
Many of the gymnasts in the field will travel to Zurich for Sunday's Swiss Cup, a mixed-pairs competition.
