Jacob Wins All-around, Leads Alabama to Top Score in NCAA Qualifier

Alabama and defending champion Florida tied for the top score (197.650) in the second of two qualification sessions Friday at the NCAA Championships for women in Birmingham, Ala. Also advancing from that round was Nebraska, with 197.100, while Utah (197.025) and UCLA (197.000) just missed the cut. Penn State was a distant sixth with 194.825.

The all-around champion also came from the evening session when Alabama's Kim Jacob posted a 39.625. Defending champion Bridget Sloan of Florida lost a chance of a repeat with a fall on balance beam (38.975). Katherine Grable (Arkansas) and Alaina Johnson (Florida) tied for second with 39.600.

Oklahoma was near flawless to win the afternoon session, posting a 197.500. Georgia was second with 197.300 and LSU (197.100) grabbed the third and final spot from that session to advance tomorrow's Super Six Final. Failing to advance from session I: Stanford (196.600), Michigan (196.425) and Illinois (195.800).

The team championship will be decided Saturday evening, with apparatus finals on Sunday.
