Ukrainian star Oleg Vernyayev won his third all-around title in as many weeks, winning the 18th Valeri Liukin Invitational on Saturday in Frisco, Texas.

After inconsistent performances throughought 2013, Vernyayev has now ended the year with a streak of success. He won the DTB World Cup on Dec. 1, the Glasgow World Cup on Dec. 7, and he followed the World Cup victories with another first place finish in Frisco.

Vernyayev scored 92.100 to win the event over Japanese junior Wataru Tanigawa and U.S. Olympian Danell Leyva (88.200). In September, Tanigawa was second all-around at the Japan Junior International in Yokohama.

Vernyayev had the top scores on floor exercise (15.200), still rings (16.000), parallel bars (15.850) and high bar (15.350). Tanigawa had the best score on vault (15.200) while Japan's Kazuyuki Takeda (Nippon Sport Science University) won pommel horse with 15.000.

Verynayev and Maxim Semyankiv, fifth all-around, paired up to help Ukraine edge Japan in the team competition, 179.750-179.400. Puerto Rico (169.150) finished third over the host club, WOGA (169.050).

The competition is held in honor of world and Olympic champion Valeri Liukin, who has reached legendary status as both an athlete and coach. Highlights of his career include the 1987 European all-around title, two two gold medals at the 1988 Olympics, and pioneering the triple back on floor exercise. Liukin, a native of Kazakhstan, also a skill named after him on high bar (full-twisting layout Tkatchev).

Liukin and former acrobat Yevgeny Marchenko founded the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Plano in the early 1990s, and the club has gone on to renowned success. The club produced back-to-back Olympic all-around champions in Carly Patterson (coached by Marchenko) and Nastia Liukin (coached by her father), in addition to two-time world champion Hollie Vise and two-time world all-around medalist Rebecca Bross.

The three-day competition includes hundreds of male gymnasts competing from level 6 to elite.
