The reigning world champions won the first three men's events as competition began Saturday at the Toyota Cup in Toyota City, Japan.

Japan put up its top team, including its three gold medalists from the world championships, held Sept. 30-Oct. 6 in Antwerp. The field included mostly gymnasts from Asia, with a few from the Americans and Europe.

Teenage twisting sensation Kenzo Shirai won the title on men's floor exercise, where he had blitzed the field in Antwerp. Shirai hit all his tricks — including the quadruple twist dismount now named after him — to score even higher than he had in Antwerp, notching 16.325. His superstar teammate Kohei Uchimura, the Olympic and four-time world all-around champion, finished second by nearly a point (15.500).

World champion Kohei Kameyama and Ryohei Kato went 1-2 again for Japan on pommel horse. British star Daniel Keatings fell while attempting his new 7.4-Difficulty routine but still won the bronze.

World and Olympic champion Arthur Zanetti (Brazil) topped Japan's Koji Yamamuro, 15.875-15.375, to win the gold medal on still rings. Germany's Marcel Nguyen won the bronze with 15.375.

The rings event saw a rare fall from, Uchimura who attempted but missed a double-twisting double layout dismount.

In the women's competition, world bronze medalist Phan Thi Ha Thanh (Vietnam) topped Mai Murakami (Japan) and teammate Do Thi Van Anh to win the vault title.

Japan's Asuka Teramoto, who won the all-around at the Tokyo World Cup in April, injured her ankle in the warm-up and withdrew.

Canada's Victoria Moors won the gold medal on uneven bars, hitting her Maloney-half and Stalder-half to Jaeger before finishing with her namesake dismount.

The competition continues Sunday with the remaining events. It airs on Japanese television Sunday late Sunday evening.
