Although Russian star Viktoria Komova missed the recent world championships in Antwerp because of serious illness, she told IG she was happy for teammate Aliya Mustafina and is eager to return to training soon.

"Aliya is really smart," said Komova of Mustafina, who finished first on balance beam, third on uneven bars and third all-around in Antwerp. "She showed her character, and performed excellently, despite her very difficult preparation for the championships."

Mustafina was the ace in Antwerp for the Russian women's world team, which was was depleted by injuries. In addition to Komova's absence, 2012 Olympians Maria Paseka and Anastasia Grishina were sidelined with back injuries. Two-time Olympian Ksenia Afanasyeva, the 2011 world champion on floor exercise, underwent ankle surgery in September. Veteran Tatiana Nabiyeva, who had been expected to compete all four events in Antwerp, smacked her head in training and ended up competing vault and uneven bars only.

Komova, who placed second all-around and first on uneven bars at the 2011 Worlds in Tokyo, is hopeful to return to the gym following what her father, Alexander Komov, referred to as a "serious" case of meningitis.

"Everything is OK with Vika, and she should begin training soon," Komov told IG. "But, on the advice of the doctors, she isn't training yet, in order to fully recover from her illness. We shall hope that all will be well and Vika will please us with even more victories!"

Komova said she is grateful for the encouragement she has received from her admirers who have wished her a speedy recovery.

"I am passing along my thanks to all of my fans for their good wishes," she said.

This is the kind of story that IG ought to be publishing
often. Readers, including fans of men's and women's gymnastics,
like to know about athletes' conditions -- especially when they
are sidelined and why.
