Olympians Line up for March FIG Events

Twelve medalists from the 2012 Olympic Games in London will be back in action this weekend at the 19th French International, the first of three FIG events in March.

The French International, a World Cup event, will be followed by World Challenger Cup competitions in Cottbus, March 21-24, and Doha, March 27-29. The three consecutive weekends of FIG competitions are all for apparatus specialists.

Typically held at the 25,000-seat Palais Omnisport in Paris-Bercy, the French International will take place at the brand new Vendéspace arena in La Roche-sur-Yon in western France. The French International is the first gymnastics event at the €60 million arena, which opened in September 2012 and is nicknamed "Le Petit Bercy."

Two-time Czech Olympian Kristýna Pálešová, scheduled to compete on uneven bars during Friday's qualification, gave a thumbs up to the Vendéspace, which seats up to 5,000 people.

"I like the new arena," she told IG on Friday. "It's quite smaller than others, but the place for the audience is big. But I like that it's small so it looks more like a home environment."

Romanian star Larisa Iordache, IG's cover girl for March 2013, is on the roster for the three competitions, along with Olympic teammate Diana Bulimar. Iordache is scheduled to compete all four events during Friday's qualification at the Vendéspace.

The French International field boasts 2012 Olympic champions Krizstian Berki of Hungary (pommel horse) and Yang Hak Seon of Korea (men's vault).

Olympic uneven bars champion Aliya Mustafina of Russia had been scheduled to compete uneven bars and balance beam, but withdrew, presumably to prepare for next month's European championships in Moscow.

Hamilton Sabot, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist on parallel bars, headlines the home team's delegation in France, along with Samir Aït Saïd. Aït Saïd, a European championship silver medalist on still rings (2010) and vault (2011), is making his return to competition after breaking his leg on vault at the 2012 Europeans in Montpellier.

Six-time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina, once again representing Uzbekistan, is scheduled to compete vault and floor exercise in France.

The competition in Doha will mark the return to FIG competition for the North Korean gymnasts, whose two-year ban expired last fall. The FIG suspended the federation for falsifying the age of gymnast Hong Su Jong. Hong's sister, 2008 Olympic vault champion Hong Un Jong, is on the roster for Doha along with male vault star Ri Se Gwang.

In addition to Iordache and Bulimar, six other gymnasts are also scheduled for all three competitions: Nicolos Cordoba (Argentina), Janine Berger and Andreas Bretschneider (Germany), Valērija Grišāne (Latvia), and Teja Belak and Sašo Bertoncelj (Slovenia).
