The executive committee of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has honored Japan's Hidenori Futagi as the first recipient of the FIG Order.
Futagi is the president of the Japan Gymnastic Association and a member of the FIG Foundation.
"The distinction honours the many humanitarian efforts and activities organized and funded by the philanthropist throughout the world of sport, particularly in gymnastics," the FIG announced.
Futagi, 76, is the former head of the AEON Co. Ltd, one of Japan's largest retail groups, and is a noted philanthrophist. In 2011, he donated $100,000 to the Japanese Red Cross to help survivors of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
