Komova Victorious Over Mustafina at Russian Cup
(20 votes, average 4.60 out of 5)

Viktoria Komova defeated teammate Aliya Mustafina to win the Russian Cup women's all-around title, held Friday in Penza.

With the top score on every event, Viktoria Komova defeated 2010 world champion Aliya Mustafina for the Russian Cup women's all-around title, held Friday in Penza.

Komova improved her score from Wednesday's qualification by 1.533 points to take the title, her first all-around victory since the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. Her total of 60.767 showed her to be back on track for this summer's Olympic Games after ankle surgery earlier this year, which had limited her to bars and beam at last month's European championships.

The reigning world and European champion on bars showed an upgraded set (piked Tkatchev and double full out dismount) that earned 16.200 — the highest mark of the day — and also had the best scores on vault (15.200), balance beam (15.067) and floor exercise (14.300).

Mustafina, the top qualifier, had the second-best scores on vault (15.037) and uneven bars (15.867), and notched 14.100 on balance beam and 14.133 on floor exercise. Her all-around total of 59.167 was slightly lower than she had scored in qualification, but still positive considering she suffered a torn ACL just 14 months ago.

2011 world team member Yulia Inshina won the bronze, exactly 3 points behind Mustafina.

Despite a strong showing from Komova and Mustafina, the remaining contenders for the Olympic team performed poorly. Anastasia Grishina competed uneven bars only and struggled (13.800). Maria Paseka, who landed an Amanar on Wednesday for 15.800, could only muster 14.533 on Friday. World floor exercise champion Ksenia Afanasyeva scored only 14.267 on her best event and fell again on vault. European all-around champion Anna Dementyeva, who scored the top beam mark of 14.867 in qualification, fell Friday for 13.067.

First-year senior Anastasia Sidorova — whose chances for the Olympics appear to diminish further with each competition — finished eighth with disappointing scores on all four events.

Two-time world team member Tatiana Nabiyeva, on the other hand, appears back in contention for the Olympic squad with 14.767 on uneven bars. Nabiyeva, whose training had been limited by a back injury, may make a trip to London if she can regain her Amanar vault in the next month.

Competition continues Saturday with the first day of apparatus finals.

What happened to Anna?
I have to say it again...what happened to Anna Myzdrikova? There was a time I thought she was going to be Russia's top gymnast and her floor routine was simply amazing. I don't know if she has had a lot of injuries over the last couple of years, but she doesn't even look like the same person. I can't recall seeing a gymnast change this much in such a dramatic fashion so quickly. Don't get me wrong, I love her but I just find it puzzling. She did end up in sixth position, but her scores don't seem very high. Thoughts?
