British Top Qualification at Senior Europeans
(3 votes, average 5.00 out of 5)

Great Britain outscored Russia on Thursday to place first in the senior qualification at the 2012 Men's European Gymnastics Championships in Montpellier, France.

Despite illness, Daniel Purvis led Britain to first place with 265.718, more than a point ahead of Russia (264.474). Host France qualified third with 263.687.

Rising star Denis Ablyazin shone bright for Russia, qualifying first to the finals on floor exercise and vault. Teammate Emin Garibov had the top mark on high bar.

Defending champion Germany, competing without star Fabian Hambüchen, qualified fourth.

The qualification competition shares the same format as finals, with three gymnasts competing on each event and all three scores counting toward the team total. Several teams counted low scores that affected the rankings, including an 11.766 from Russia's Anton Golotsutskov on pommel horse and 12.766 from David Belyavsky on high bar. Purvis stumbled completely off the podium on his vault (13.966), an event where he usually scores close to 16. Former European champion Yann Cucherat had an uncharacteristic miss on parallel bars (13.766) for France, and teammate Samir Ait Said scored just 11.833 on pommel horse. Germany, meanwhile, swallowed several low scores, including falls from Philipp Boy on vault (14.833) and Marcel Nguyen on high bar (13.666).

An improved performance in Saturday's final could make the difference for any of the top four teams.

The British already took a gold medal in Montpellier, where the junior men won a third consecutive team title. A first senior title is within reach for the Olympic hosts, who are expected to challenge for a team medal this summer in London.

"I had a really bad night's sleep and was quite ill so didn't even know if I'd compete this morning," Purvis said. "On vault I had to battle to keep myself focused, I landed and ended up on the floor, I didn't know what had happened but actually it woke me up a bit. My teammates, coaches and the physio were great and stuck by me and that filled me with confidence and drive to carry on. I'm really happy to have battled back and contributed to the team results - now I need rest and an ice cream."

Romania, Belarus, Ukraine and Switzerland rounding out the qualifiers to Saturday's team final. Dmitry Barkalov, the 2010 Russian all-around champion, impressed in his first outing for Belarus with a spot in the floor exercise final. Ukraine is missing star Nikolai Kuksenkov, whose dreams of an Olympic medal may be in jeopardy after he suffered a badly sprained ankle.

Belarus had the top team total on parallel bars, while Russia led floor exercise, still rings and vault. Britain had the best total on pommel horse with Louis Smith (15.900) and Max Whitlock (15.066) qualifying to the finals. France had the best total on high bar.

Seventeeth overall, Hungary shone on pommel horse with the second-best team total, with Krisztian Berki's 15.900 tied with Smith for the high mark. Olympic qualifier Vid Hidvegi (15.200) also advanced to Saturday's final.

Ireland, 15th, tallied the third-best team score on floor exercise, where Kieran Behan qualified third to the final. Andrew Smith contributed 14.925 and Irish-American Rohan Sebastian of the University of Michigan scored 14.666.

Competition continues Friday in Montpellier with the junior men's all-around final.
