British Juniors Best in Europe Again

Great Britain won a third consecutive junior team title on Wednesday as the 2012 Men's European Gymnastics Championships began in Montpellier, France.

Great Britain won a third consecutive junior team title on Wednesday as the 2012 Men's European Gymnastics Championships began in Montpellier, France.

Frank Baines led Britain to first place over Russia, 253.684-251.094, with Switzerland winning the bronze (249.686). Host France took fourth (245.185).

Great Britain scored a convincing victory, with the best team totals on pommel horse, still rings, vault and high bar. Baines qualified first to the all-around final and to the floor final. Teammate had Courtney Tulloch had the top mark on still rings and Nile Wilson the best score on high bar.

"It feels brilliant to have won the gold," British junior head coach Barry Collie said. "We have worked so hard for this and fully deserve it. I'm over the moon for the boys, the personal coaches, the clubs and British Gymnastics. I went in with confidence and the boys did us proud. We have a great tradition with the junior boys and we wanted to carry that on. Once again we've proved how strong men's gymnastics is in Great Britain – we have a very bright future."

Rising Belgium impressed with fifth place, outscoring the field on pommel horse. Belgian gymnasts earned seven spots in finals, with Bram Louwije qualifying first to the pommel horse final.

Daniel Radeanu qualified first to the vault final for Romania, which finished only in 16th place. Russia's Grigory Zyryanov had the top mark on parallel bars and qualified third to the all-around final behind Baines and Switzerland's Eddy Yusof.

Competition continues Thursday in Montpellier with the senior men's qualification.
