Kanayeva Captures All-Around Gold for Second World Sweep
(9 votes, average 4.67 out of 5)

Olympic champion Yevgenia Kanayeva mined her sixth gold medal Friday at the rhythmic world championships in Montpellier, completing a total sweep of the individual titles.

In her closest competition this week, Kanayeva narrowly defended her all-around title over Russian teammate Daria Kondakova, 116.650-116.600. Azeri gymnast Aliya Garayeva won the bronze with 112.450.

Kanayeva is now the most successful rhythmic gymnast in history, with 17 world championship gold medals, including three world all-around titles. She is the only gymnast to sweep six gold medals at a world championships, having first swept the 2009 Worlds. Next summer, she will attempt to be the first rhythmic gymnast to win two Olympic all-around titles.

"I'm very tired," said Kanayeva, a native of Omsk. "It was the fifth day, and each time I had to prove myself, always under stress, and the fatigue accumulates. Now I will rest — for one week exactly."

The top 15 gymnasts in Friday's all-around final earn berths to the 2012 Olympic Games. Gymnasts ranking 16-24 in the all-around final earned invitations for their nations to the second Olympic qualification event in January.

Competition continues Saturday in Montpellier with the group qualification.

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
