NJ Assemblyman Protests Level 4 State Meet
(1 vote, average 1.00 out of 5)

A New Jersey politician is unhappy about the results of the Level 4 girls state gymnastics championships, feeling one of his constituents was not treated fairly because of her religious beliefs. Assemblyman Gary Schaer sent a letter of complaint to USA Gymnastics regarding 7-year-old Amalya Knapp. Knapp, an Orthodox Jew, was unable to compete during the championships on Saturday as it is the Jewish Sabbath. However, she was allowed to compete on Sunday, but it was too late to count her scores in the official results. She would have placed fifth. Click here to read the article.

I would like to tell Gary Schaer to grow up. I am a Seventh-day Adventist and when I competed gymnastics, I had to compete on Sundays when a competition fell on a Saturday. Yeah I didn't get a medal or anything, but I was just happy to have the score to allow me to move onto the next level. Life isn't fair and the rules of the competition should be what they are and not allowed to be diverted because of some official not liking the rules.

As much as I appreciate the effort of the Assemblyman, Orthodox Jews are not the only members of a religion with restrictions. Members of the LDS church are usually not allowed to compete on Sundays. Anymore with invitationals lasting 2 or more days it is inevitable that some child will be affected by the competition schedule and their religion. It's unfortunate, but it's life.

"It's hard to watch your child not be acknowledged for everything she's worked so hard for her over the last year, just because she's an Orthodox Jew. It's not fair."

Did the mom really just say that. "just because she's and orthodox Jew"??? yeah, like that is what happend, she was not allow to compete because of here religion...sure...I am a Christian, there are a lot of things I am not allowed to do because of my religion, perhaps my assemblyman can write some letters for me, let's see , which one should we start with???
