Veterans Verona van de Leur and Jeffrey Wammes won the women's and men's senior all-around titles at the Dutch Championships, held this weekend in Nijmegen. Verona van de LeurVan de Leur, 21, finished ahead of defending champion Lichelle Wong and first-year senior Tahnee Masela. Van de Leur added gold medals on beam and floor. Berber van den Berg won vault and Masela won uneven bars. "This is the sweetest all-around title I've won so far," said van de Leur, the 2001 and 2002 Dutch champion. "Only now do I know how hard I have had to work to get here. I'm so much more delighted, as I feel I've really had to fight to obtain this title." On vault, she competed her high double-twisting Yurchenko again, and she raised the A-scores on other events since the European Championships in Amsterdam in late April. Also competing were 24-year-old Fieke Willems, a member of the Dutch team at the 1999 World Championships; and Austria's Carina Hasenöhrl, who is returning to competition following a serious neck injury. Wammes, who broke both ankles at the French International in March 2006, finished first all-around and on floor exercise, rings and vault. Epke Zonderland had mistakes on floor and pommel horse that put him out of reach of the all-around title, but he won gold medals on parallel bars and high bar. Anthony van Assche won the gold medal on pommel horse. Yuri van Gelder was supposed to compete on rings and vault in event finals, but made a last-minute decision to withdraw because of a sore back after he fell flat on his back in training on Friday. He assured that the injury was not serious. 2007 Dutch Championships Senior Women's All-Around (two-day totals) Others (did not compete in all events) Junior Women's All-Around Others (did not compete on all events) Senior Men's All-Around Others (did not compete on all events) Read profiles on Wong and Hasenöhrl in the July/August 2007 issue of International Gymnast magazine.
