Ukraine's Nikolai Kuksenkov and Venezula's Jessica Lopez won the 34th Joaquim Blume Memorial, held Saturday in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain.

Ninth all-around at the recent world championships, Kuksenkov scored 87.700 to edge Russian Olympian Sergei Khorokhordin (87.600). Spain's Javier Gomez won the bronze (86.650).

In the women's competition, Lopez (54.750) defeated Ukraine's Yana Demyanchuk (54.350) and Romania's Diana Chelaru (53.650). Lopez, a 2008 Olympian, competes for the University of Denver.

The competition began with a moment of silence for world all-around bronze medalist Yuri Ryazanov of Russia, who was killed in a car crash Oct. 20.

The competition marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Blume, the 1957 European all-around champion from Barcelona, who was killed in a plane crash April 29, 1959.

The event also included a celebratory tone, however, as the Catalonian Gymnastics Federation took the opportunity to honor 2000 and 2004 Olympic vault champion Gervasio Deferr and his coach, Alfredo Hueto, for their contribution to the sport in Catalonia.

Deferr, who won the silver medal on floor exercise at the 2008 Olympics, is training full time for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He turns 29 in November.

"Gymnastics is a sport that is constantly evolving," the Barcelona native told a local newspaper. "Every day there is someone who does something more difficult. You keep learning."
