2008 Olympic champion Yevgenia Kanayeva (Russia) won three more gold medals Thursday at the 2009 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Mie, Japan.

Olympic champion Yevgenia Kanayeva (Russia) appears headed for a historic sweep at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Mie, Japan.

Kanayeva, who won rope and hoop Tuesday, took three more gold medals Thursday. The 19 year old won the ball and ribbon finals, while Russia wrapped up the team title.

With all four individual apparatus titles, Kanayeva is the clear favorite to win the all-around final on Friday. Winning six world titles would be the first for rhythmic or women's artistic gymnastics. Soviet gymnast Lyudmila Szavinkova won all three golds at the 1963 World Rhythmic Championships, which featured an all-around event plus two individual exercises. In 1992, the late Oksana Kostina (Russia) won or tied for all five individual titles, but no team competition was held.

Defending world champion Anna Bessonova (Ukraine) picked up the bronze with the ball and the silver with the ribbon. Other medalists were Azerbaijan's Aliya Garaveya, second with the ball, and Bulgaria's Silvia Miteva, third with the ribbon.

In the team competition, Belarus finished second ahead of Azerbaijan. Ukraine finished fifth and Bulgaria sixth.

Competition continues Friday with all-around final. Group competition begins Saturday. The competition is airing live and on demand at universalsports.com.
