Olympic champion Yevgenia Kanayeva (Russia) captured both golds Tuesday at the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Mie, Japan. Kanayeva, who led the qualification for both rope and hoop, won the finals Tuesday evening. The reigning European champion is favored to sweep the competition in Mie. Teammate Daria Kondakova won the silver medal in both events. Kondakova, 18, is making her world championships debut in Mie. Kanayeva, who swept the competition at the 2009 European Championships in Torino, said she has "transformed" her routines since the Olympics in Beijing. The 19-year-old Kanayeva is competing for the first timeas the leader for the dominant Russian team, head coach Irina Viner said. "At the world championships in Patras two years ago, Yevgenia was only fourth on the Russian team, and medaled only in the team competition," Viner said. "Now she is the obvious favorite for the all-around title." 2007 world all-around champion Anna Bessonova (Ukraine) won the bronze with the rope. Belarusian Melitina Stanyuta was third on hoop.
